Organisms face a fundamental tradeoff: An organism can invest time and energy in immediate reproduction or they can delay reproduction and invest energy in other processes, with the potential for more or higher quality reproduction in the future. An inevitable consequence of these “life history” tradeoffs is a particular maturation schedule.
